Once you start into the gateway animal of chickens your homestead will never be the same. Just kidding!
But they definitely do change your outlook on self-sustainability and self-reliance. Their eggs provide a great protein source, along with containing a healthy fat and trace nutrients. Eggs are known pretty much known as a “perfect food”, as they contain a little bit of almost every nutrient your body needs.
Once your hens start laying it is so exciting to have the egg collection and have the freshest eggs possible. Yet at our homestead part of the equation comes into play as to how many eggs are you collecting and how does it compare to the previous day, month, or year.
Having all this information in a simple spreadsheet makes retrievable data at any time. I simply have the printed spreadsheet in my pantry and I write down the number of eggs collected each day. Then once a month I key the figures into my spreadsheet so I have the long-term data. You can add notes, eg. extreme cold weather, molting times.
Feel free to download this Excel spreadsheet for your use. It calculates the total and average each month based on the particular month.
